What are the Public Provident Fund Interest Rate 2018-2019

The public provident fund is one of the most preferred investment methods because of its tax-free option. A public provident fund is a 15 years product and it is one of the best investment methods. It was started by the government of India in 1968 with an interest rate of 4.8%.

50 years of history of interest rate offered by the public provident fund

Before knowing the current interest rates of public provident funds let us have a look at the 50 years interest rate history of the public provident fund.

  1. The interest rate was 4.8% from 1968 to 1970.
  2. The interest rate was 5% from 1970 to 1973.
  3. The interest rate was 5.30% from 1973 to 1974.
  4. The interest rate was 5.80% from 1st April 1974 to 31st July 1974.
  5. The interest rate was 7% from 1st Aug 1974 to 31st Mar 1975.
  6. The interest rate was 7% from 1975 to 1977.
  7. The interest rate was 7.50% from 1977 to 1980.
  8. The interest rate was 8% from 1980 to 1981.
  9. The interest rate was 8.50% from 1981 to 1983.
  10. The interest rate was 9% from 1983 to 1984.
  11. The interest rate was 9.50% from 1984 to 1985.
  12. The interest rate was 10% from 1985 to 1986.
  13. The interest rate was 12% from 1st April 1986 to 14th Jan 2000.
  14. The interest rate was 11% from 15th Jan 2000 to 28th Feb 2001.
  15. The interest rate was 9.50% from 1st March 2001 to 28th Feb 2002.

  21. From 2016 to 2017, the interest rates were fixed as per the quarters.

From the history of the interest rate of the provident funds, you can conclude that there was a sharp increase in interest rate to 12% from 1986 to 2000.  And then it gradually reduces and gradually increases.
